Canada offers the following types of courses
- Certificate – typically up to 1 year
- Diploma – generally duration is 1-2 years
- Advanced Diploma – this program runs for 2-3 years
- Bachelor’s Degree – 3 to 4 years (or higher if you opt for industrial placement)
- Post Graduate Diploma – it varies for 1–2-year study after your Bachelor’s degree
- Master’s Degree – Only after Bachelor’s degree and from 1 to 2 years duration)
- Doctoral – (PhD equivalent and takes 4 to 7 years to complete)

Typically Admission Process entails the following steps
- A student must understand his current skill set / educational qualifications / current work experience / extra-curricular achievements
- Be aware of various types of programs/courses to apply
- Prioritize the list of 1-2 courses he wants to study in Canada
- Evaluate and shortlist 6-7 universities /colleges to apply for admissions based on criteria of affordability/university ranking/tuition fees/placement opportunities/location/co-op options offered
- Take the English Language Test (Academic) well before applying
- Prepare a Statement of Purpose as asked for by different universities
- Obtain Letters of Recommendation from current/previous professors (Education related) and from your superiors
- Apply to the approved Universities / Colleges at least two weeks before the cut-off date
Steps to Apply for Student Permit in Canada
- Once the university offers you admission – they will issue an admission offer and you have to accept the same.
- Next, you have to prepare an online study permit form and ensure to keep all documents ready -ie. Financial statements/income proof or sponsor documents / medical certificate /police clearance certificate / attested study certificates / English language test results
- After paying study permit fees you can seek an appointment with VFS for biometrics
- Take printout of supporting documents including bank-attested SB account statement – in case you are asked to appear for the embassy interview
- Attend the interview and wait for the result
- Students applying under the Student Dir4ct Scheme (SDS) will get results within 3 weeks
